Tips to prevent Roof Leaks

7/7/2023 (Permalink)

Roof Leaks has been one of the main causes for water damage in buildings and homes.

Here are some tips to prevent roof leaks:

  1. Regular Roof Inspections: Perform regular inspections of your roof to identify and address any potential issues before they escalate. Look for signs of damage such as missing or damaged shingles, cracked flashing, deteriorated sealant, or sagging areas.
  2. Maintain Gutters and Downspouts: Clean your gutters and downspouts regularly to ensure proper water drainage. Remove leaves, debris, and any blockages that could cause water to overflow and potentially seep under the roof.
  3. Trim Trees and Overhanging Branches: Trim back any tree branches that are touching or in close proximity to your roof. Overhanging branches can cause physical damage to the roof surface and provide a pathway for animals or debris to access the roof.
  4. Proper Installation and Repairs: When installing a new roof or conducting repairs, ensure that you hire a qualified professional with experience in roof installation. Proper installation techniques and quality materials are essential for preventing future roof leaks.

A compromised roof due to missing or damaged shingles, deteriorated flashing, or clogged gutters can allow water to seep into the house, leading to water damage in ceilings, walls, and other areas, but nothing that our independently owned franchise cant help you with, don't hesitate to call SERVPRO of Lafayette/Moraga/Orinda at (925)299-1323, We are here to help 24/7.

Bathrooms are a Typical Source of Water Damage in Lafayette Homes

9/1/2021 (Permalink)

Bathroom Flooding The water damage to this bathroom in Marin County caused significant flooding, requiring extensive cleanup services.

Bathroom Water Damage in Your Lafayette Home

Water damage knows no bounds and can occur at any time and in any location. There are, however, a few rooms in the house that are more vulnerable to water damage than others. Take, for example, the bathroom. Three areas of the bathroom are particularly prone to water damage.

1. Bathroom sinks

2. The bathtub

3. The toilet

Leak Under the Sink

When you discover a pool of water on the bathroom floor beside or inside the cabinet, you are witnessing the dreaded situation you may have scoured the internet for: "leaking pipe under bathroom sink." Finding out where the leak is coming from is essential for fixing a leak under the bathroom sink. You can fix or replace the defective part once you know where the leak is coming from. A clogged drainpipe, a loose pipe connection, or a leaking sink drain are the most common causes. So, if you notice a problem under your sink, act quickly to repair the leak and dry the damaged area.

Trouble in the Tub

Another common area in the bathroom where water damage can be seen is around the tub and the shower. If water can escape the tub's constraints, it could be due to one of the following issues:

1. Burst Pipes

Burst pipes are one of the most common causes of water damage in bathrooms. Unregulated water pressure, temperature variations, or the overall deterioration of old pipes can all cause this. In addition, in the winter, uninsulated pipes can potentially freeze, causing pipes to burst.

2. Leaking Pipes

There are various aspects of a shower enclosure or bath that could be leaking, and you should inspect them. Caulking around the edges, just like your sinks and toilets, will keep water from seeping into the walls, behind shower enclosures, and beneath your tub. You may already have water seeping in where it doesn't belong if it shows signs of wear, cracking, discoloration, degradation, pealing, or missing entirely. Water damage behind the walls of your shower or tub may cause major issues in the future, or it may be growing mold without your knowledge.

3. Sewage Backup

Due to heavy rainfall or other storms, sewer systems are sometimes unable to handle the volume. Issues with main sewer lines might also prevent them from carrying wastewater away. When the main sewage line clogs, water and sewage will back up your pipes and enter your home through the lowest point, usually the shower drain. This is a highly serious condition that water damage experts should treat to decrease the risk of health hazards.

Toilet Overflow

Your toilet and sewage system are both straightforward systems that remove sewage from your home using gravitational forces. However, water damage is not far behind when something hinders this system from working as it should. For example, clogs in drain lines or the central sewage system might stop waste from leaving the house and cause the toilet to overflow. Black water is the term for this overflow. When dealing with a toilet overflow, keep your distance and contact a professional water damage restoration company like SERVPRO of Lafayette/Moraga/Orinda. This type of water frequently includes Black Water, the most dangerous kind of water damage because it has encountered feces, a breeding ground for toxic germs and disease-causing pathogens.

Time to Spot a Potential Water Leak

A bathroom water leak is never a good thing. Unfortunately, homeowners squander tens of thousands of gallons of water each year. Bills and stress levels climb as water seeps out of the pipes and into your home. Water damage is usually proportionate to the amount of time it goes unchecked. As a result, the key to avoiding unnecessary damage is to recognize the issue before it has a chance to escalate.

Can You Save a Flood Damaged Carpet or Rug?

8/4/2021 (Permalink)

A carpet may be an expensive investment, so finding it in a destroyed state and thinking it needs to be replaced can be worrying. The age and quality of the carpet are important considerations in determining whether it must be replaced. Furthermore, understanding the sort of floodwater involved is critical in determining whether damaged carpet cleaning is possible. In the water damage restoration industry, we classify floodwater into three main categories.

Category 1: Clean Water

Clean water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet. If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on the length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

Category 2: Gray Water

Gray water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or health effects. Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

Category 3: “Black Water”

Black water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe health effects if ingested and any contact should be avoided. Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water form the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

Because every water damage situation is unique, you won’t know for sure if or when your carpet and pad can be saved unless you have a professional restoration company assess the damage. Time can mean the difference between saving your carpet and saving money by not having to replace it. However, in some cases, carpet replacement is unavoidable due to the toxicity of the water that caused the damage.

Although there are some DIY solutions for dealing with water damage, it’s better to leave it to the professionals. Professionals trained in water damage restoration have the appropriate knowledge, expertise, and equipment to work on your water-damaged property. You secure your safety and well-being by have an expert work on the damage. Doing it yourself, depending on the type of water, might be dangerous and lead to health effects. You put yourself at danger of developing health effects if you don’t have the necessary safety gear.

If you experienced water damage and suspect your carpet has been damaged, give SERVPRO of Lafayette/Moraga/Orinda a call for a free inspection. Call us today at (925) 299-1323.

Can Water Intrusion Ruin Hardwood Floors in My Lafayette Home?

6/29/2021 (Permalink)

How to Save Your Hardwood Floors From Water Damage in Your Lafayette Home

Water and wood do not mix. Wood flooring is susceptible to moisture damage when there is a water loss in the home. Depending on the water source, any number of contaminants can erode the finish and potentially harm the wood. Therefore, to save hardwood that has been damaged by water, swift response time is critical.

Why are wood floors so quickly destroyed when a house floods?

When a property is flooded, the flooring is often the first to be damaged. The moisture that collects because the pooling is quickly absorbed by wood and carpet. When water lies on top of hardwood floors, the wood absorbs the water via its pores, producing warping and discoloration, which can be irreversible. A water damage restoration company in Lafayette is required to avoid significant damage. SERVPRO knows the value of speedy response times, which is why we react to callouts as quickly as possible.

What should I do when my hardwood floors are water damaged?

Call SERVPRO of Lafayette/Moraga/Orinda right away. Water or flood damage to your wood flooring an unexpected event that may be intimidating, distressing, and costly. Water damage causes immediate harm to the construction materials used to construct your home. If  not addressed quickly, the damage can be irreparable. SERVPRO offers emergency water damage drying and restoration services to prevent further damage to your beautiful wood flooring. With our wood floor drying technology, we can often save your hardwood floors after they have been damaged by water. It is critical to recognize the various sources of water and moisture damage to hardwood floors. Here are the top 5 types of hardwood floor moisture issues:

  1. Cupping: When moisture builds up in the hardwood, it expands on the sides and edges, causing the flooring to be uneven. As a result, the sides protrude and are not parallel to the wood's core.
  2. Crowning: Due to moisture build-up, the wood boards are pressed together in the case of crowning. Depending on the quantity of moisture present, the form of physical damage could result in wooden planks sticking out of the wood, which can cause shrinking permanently. The sooner you find the source of the problem and dry up the floors, the less likely you are to have to replace the hardwood floors.
  3. Buckling: Buckling is an uncommon occurrence in which individual hardwood pieces detach from the subfloor and protrude. Extreme water damage, such as that caused by severe floods, is the most common cause of buckling. Because buckling is one of the most serious forms of physical damage, replacing the hardwood floors is your best bet for the future.

What is the Water Damage Drying Process for Wooden Floors?

Water damage and Insurance

11/17/2020 (Permalink)

Different types of water damage are insured by different types of policies.

Homeowners and renters insurance provides coverage for burst pipes, wind driven rain and damage resulting from ice dams on your roof. Generally speaking, water that comes from the top down—such as rainfall and burst sprinklers—is covered by a standard homeowners policy.

Some policies cover sewer and drain backups, but many do not; however, you can purchase a sewer backup rider to your homeowners or renters coverage.

Typically, water that comes from the bottom up—such as an overflowing river—is covered by a separate flood insurance policy, which can be purchased from the federal government’s National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), and from some private insurers. If you live in a flood prone area, learn more about appropriate coverage.

Properly maintaining a home is one of the best ways to prevent water damage from water disasters.

Gutter Cleaning Prevents Water Leaks

11/27/2019 (Permalink)

Water leaks are the worst. This rainy season make sure you’ve protected your home by cleaning your gutters. Here at SERVPRO® of Lafayette/Moraga/Orinda we know how devastating it can be to endure heavy water damage. Therefore, we would like to share with you steps on how to take control by reinforcing your drainage system.

What you'll need:

  • Ladder
  • Buckets or a tarp
  • Trowel or gutter scoop
  • Garden hose
  • Spray nozzle
  • Wire hooks
  • Work gloves or latex gloves
  • Gutter hardware

First thing you’d want to do is place the ladder squarely and safely on the floor. Then place a tarp or buckets underneath for collecting debris. Put on your latex gloves and then your work gloves to keep your hands dry. Afterwards, grab the debris you can clogging the gutters and throw them to the tarp below or place them in a bucket. The next step would be to use the garden hose with the spray nozzle attached to flush any remaining debris in the gutters. If you don’t see the same amount of water is releasing from the drain, it might mean that you have a clog. In this case you’d want to place the hose at full power from the bottom of your gutter to shoot water in the opposite direction.  The last thing would be to check the gutter and see if it is sloped correctly to remove the possibility of standing water.

Taking these steps will assure that you have a nice clean flow of water when the rain falls.

If you need restoration services from a leader in the industry with nationwide support. Then call us at (925) 299-1323. Call us anytime!

We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Rainy Season Begins. How to Prevent Water Damage.

Winter is coming

I just learned that in California it can get cold enough that your pipes can freeze. This can lead to a very expensive accident if a pipe ruptures and leads water to seep in all over your home. Therefore, it is important to take preventative measures to ensure you will avoid unnecessary headaches.

Check your pipes

Have them insulated by either surrounding them with either foam or any other insulator material. Use electrical tape to wrap the insulator around your pipe. For pipes that are hard to reach, use hot water to run through the pipes which assist in warming up the pipes.

Another preventative measure you can take is by caulking and sealing your windows in your home.

Inspect your home and count the windows around. Use a caulk gun, if you do not possess one go to your local hardware store and buy one. You could also ask a professional to determine which caulk you will need to seal your windows.  Consider as well, your timing of the project and the weather conditions. Caulk may take 24 hours to dry and a rainstorm could ruin your progress. Then make sure you clean and remove any old caulk before applying the new caulk. Smooth it out with a popsicle stick or plastic spoon. Then wait for 24 hours and your home becomes better insulated.

How long it has been since your roof was inspected?

I would advise hiring a professional to inspect your roof since it can be dangerous. Also, make sure your gutters are cleaned to remove any blockage of drainage due to excess gunk or leaves.

There are many more preventative measures but taking these steps will secure your home a little more than just riding the season out.

Water Damage Prevention

Recovering from water damage is time consuming, aggravating and costly. These are all good reasons to take precautions to lessen the chances of your property being damaged by water or to reduce that amount of damage.

One way to prevent water damage is as easy as occasionally checking your plumbing system for leaks, including pipes and faucets in sinks, toilets, showers and bathtubs.

In particular, look for discoloration around sinks, as this may be an indication of a leaking pipe. For extra protection, re-caulk around sinks.

Preventing and repairing small problems, such as a toilet leak, could save you a lot of time and money in the long run. A leak left unchecked often requires the expertise of a professional to fix the damage.

Also, inspect the area surrounding water heaters and air conditioning units for wet spots. As preventative maintenance, have your air conditioner inspected by a professional at least once a year.

Sump pumps also should be checked for problems a few times a year.

On the outside of your home, regularly inspect your roof and gutter systems for problems.

Signs of water problems in your roofing system are broken or cracked shingles, damaged chimneys and vents, deterioration in roofing valleys and/or water stains on your ceilings. Detecting these minor problems early on can keep major problems from developing in the future. Serious roof damage can be very difficult and expensive to fix.

For your gutters, make sure they are free of debris, such as leaves and sticks. Consider installing gutter shields to prevent debris build up. Downspouts should be pointed away from your building to stop water accumulation at your home's foundation.

Here is a list of some steps you can take to remediate water damage before the professionals arrive:

  • Remove standing water from the interior of your property. Try sweeping it outdoors, and then wet-vac the remainder.
  • Relocate wet carpet and other water-logged items to a sunny area, if possible, to aid in the dry-out process.
  • If possible, run a dehumidifier to help prevent mold growth and speed the drying process.
  • Move debris and other items damaged beyond repair to the exterior of your property for easy pick up by trash haulers.
  • Transfer valuables to a safe and dry place.
  • Document property damage in writing and take photos, if possible, for insurance claim purposes and for the restoration professionals.

The Effects of a Flood on Your Home

8/7/2019 (Permalink)

Most people believe fire can cause the most damage to their home. However, water damage can be just as costly and devastating to your home as fire damage. One flood can ruin your home forever, especially if your home does not undergo proper water damage restoration after being flooded. Floods can damage your home both cosmetically and structurally.

Most floods occur during storms, such as hurricanes, or during the spring time when the snow melts. However, many homes are flooded by over run sewage systems or other human caused floods. These types of floods enter your home from the outside. The flood water seeps through your walls causing damage to your drywall, insulation and even your electrical systems. If your home is not properly repaired after this type of damage it will most likely start to grow dangerous mold inside the walls. Your home may also start to smell due to the water damage.

Wood frame homes that have been flooded may also start to have structural damage. Wood frames that have been saturated with flood water may start to warp and rot, leading to costly repairs and permanent damage to your home.

After your walls have been damaged by flood water you will most likely have to remove the drywall and insulation and replace them with new materials. If your walls were textured, you will have to retexture your walls before repainting them. Flooding can also damage the outside of your home as well. The outside walls of your home may need to be resided, retextured or have the stucco replaced.

Once the flood water has made its way inside your home it begins to damage your flooring. Carpets will become saturated and, if they are not restored properly, will have to be replaced. However, if carpets are restored and dried properly by a water damage restoration specialist, they may be able to be salvaged. But remember, it's always best to discard carpet that has been affected by water not considered to have come from a clean source. Any baseboards you have in your home will also most likely need to be replaced after they have come into contact with flood water.

Other types of flooding such as toilet overflows, will start to damage your home from the inside. However, in cases of extreme flooding, these types of flooding can also damage your walls.

Floods can also cause damage to any cabinetry in your kitchen or bathrooms. Cheaper quality cabinets made from particle board will usually have to be replaced because they will fall apart. Appliances that touch the floor such as dishwashers, stoves and washing machines may have to be replaced due to flood damage as well.

It is important to remember that while many people think of flood water as just being water, it has much more in it. Flood water is filled with chemicals, dirt, human waste and debris that can find its way into your home if it is flooded.

The best way to save your home and prevent costly repairs after it has been flooded is to call a licensed water damage restoration specialist. A good water damage restoration company will act quickly to prevent further damage and return your home to normal.

Spotting Water Damage

12/19/2018 (Permalink)

SERVPRO of Lafayette / Moraga / Orinda knows that sometimes it's the water you don't see that causes most of the damage and because we care about you we brought information on how to see signs of water damage in your basement of foundation. Evidence of water damage isn’t always obvious and sometimes it’s not even visible so make sure you pay attention to these signs:

  • CHANGES IN COLOR/TEXTURE OF SURFACES -  Both walls and floors can show signs of water damage.
  • CRACKING – This will usually occur in the foundation and/or floor and can happen both inside and outside the home.
  • ODOR – While basements and crawl spaces usually have a certain smell, it doesn’t necessarily mean there is a water problem. Pay attention to a strong damp, musty odor that doesn’t go away (even after a storm or wet weather). In most cases, it is mold or mildew that you smell, which means you’ve got moisture or water damage on your hands.
  • MOLD – If you can’t spot mold, you can sometimes smell it, so that’s why it’s important to pay attention to distinctive odors in the basement. Mold will appear on furniture, wood and other organic materials, walls and other surfaces either as dark green or black in color or sometimes a white powdery substance.

Water Damage From a Burst Pipe Should be Promptly Addressed

12/14/2017 (Permalink)

A small undetected leak can lead to great water damage.

A burst pipe can cause significant water damage in a home.  Water leakage can also be terribly expensive, disruptive to your personal schedule, and result in unwanted insurance claims. Additionally, mildew and mold can become a problem long after the initial damage. Thankfully, there are experts in water damage that can help the problems from a burst pipe be much more manageable.

Leaking Pipes

Pay attention to leaking pipes! Diligence can minimize the collateral damage from a burst pipe. Pay attention to where water has leaked. The water and moisture may have already caused a small amount of damage. Call a professional to determine what is the best course of action. An inexperienced homeowner attempting to fix the problem may just make it worse.

Preventing Structural Damage

The possibility of structural damage is the key reason homeowners should be extra vigilant regarding the plumbing in their homes. Structural damage may be difficult to spot. You should always contact an experienced contractor such as SERVPRO to assess possible structural damage from leaky or burst pipes.

Mold Hazards

Mold is another serious problem that stems from water damage. Mold can be particularly vexing to homeowners. Because mold is living, it can grow and fill large portions of a home without the homeowner being aware. Eventually, mold can lead to structural damage. Mold can be in basements, laundry rooms, and kitchens. Mold removal can be a very difficult task once a foothold has been secured. A concerned homeowner in the Bay Area should order a mold inspection after any plumbing problems to ensure that this issue does not expand into an expensive and potentially dangerous situation.

Additional Considerations

The above factors illustrate how complicated the ramifications of a burst pipe can be. A homeowner should not attempt to deal with any of these issues without the assistance of an expert well versed in water damage repair and mold remediation. The skills needed to deal effectively with mold, structural damage, and leaking pipes are beyond the average homeowner. Homeowners that attempt these tasks quite often worsen the existing problems. It is always best to hire an expert to inspect the damage after experiencing a burst pipe.   SERVPRO of Lafayette/Moraga/Orinda has the experience as a full-service water restoration company to rectify and repair all the problems related to a burst pipe.  Solving the problem of a burst pipe correctly will protect the investment of your home for years to come.

Flood Facts and Safety Tips

9/13/2017 (Permalink)

The SERVPRO System is prepared to handle any size disaster and help make it, "Like it never even happened."

Floods rank as one of the most common, costly, and deadly natural disasters in the United States. No matter where you live, flooding happens in many ways due to overflow of streams, rivers, lakes or oceans or as a result of excessive rain.  Even minor floods have the potential to cause major damage to a structure when not treated quickly and properly, and the cleanup is often an overwhelming tasks.  A flooding event may occur over a long period and could last days, weeks or longer.

Here are a few Flood Facts provided by FEMA:

  • Flash floods can bring walls of water from 10 to 20 feet high.
  • Flooding can be caused by spring thawing (snow and frozen grounds melting in the spring), heavy rains, snow melt runoffs, flash floods, and mudflows.
  • Floods are the most widespread natural disaster aside from wildfires.
  • A 2,000-square foot home undergoing 12 feet of water damage could cost more than $50,000 to repair.

Here are a few supplies you need to prepare for a flood:

  • Stock up on First Aid items
  • Non-perishable foods
  • Three gallons of water per person for 3 days
  • Battery operated radio for weather reports
  • Extra batteries
  • Personal hygiene necessities

Understanding the common types of Floods

Flash Floods - are the most dangerous kind of flood, combining the nearly unstoppable force of flood waters with deadly unpredictability and speed. Just six inches of fast-moving flood water can knock a grown man off his feet, and just two feet of water can cause a car to begin floating.

Coastal Flooding - is the result of strong onshore winds pushing on water from the ocean or bay. These can be classified as storm surges and greatly affect homes along the coast. Raising a home may help prevent flooding.

Urban flooding is specific in the fact that the cause is a lack of drainage in an urban area. As there is little open soil that can be used for water storage nearly all the precipitation needs to be transport to surface water or the sewage system.

River Flood - occurs when a river overflows its banks. This happens for a few different reasons. One, lots of rain. Whether it’s tropical systems (tropical storms, hurricanes, etc.) reaching land.

SERVPRO of Lafayette/Moraga/Orinda specializes in the cleanup and restoration of residential and commercial property after a fire, smoke or water damage event. If your home or business suffers from flood damage, our trained technicians has the expertise, resources and equipment to handle the job.

Water Damage Remediation Process

7/13/2017 (Permalink)

Call SERVPRO of Lafayette/Moraga/Orinda for excellent, effective water removal services at (925) 299-1323.

Water damage can originate from many different sources of heavy storm, floods, broken pipes or leaky roof.  The damage to your building materials can range from mild to severe depending how long it has been exposed to wet condition.  Standing water and moisture create the perfect environment for bacteria and mold.  Mold can start to grow in as little in 24 hours and if left unattended, it can be harmful to people especially those with compromised immune system.   In an event of water damage, safety is always the primary concern on any water damage job.  If you try to do this on your own, you’ll end up spending countless hours trying to figure it all out and still not come close to solving the problem.  SERVPRO Franchise professionals are highly trained and equipped with knowledge to restore your property.  Below are some steps our technicians performs during a water damage restoration.

Identifying the Source and Water Type

We will check for the source of moisture and check for contaminated water in your home or business. The source must be stopped before any restoration or drying of the building can be successful. There are different types of water, typically categorized as either Clean, Gray, or Black and each one with different safety and cleanup protocols. If necessary, our crew will work to stop the water flow as quickly as possible to avert further damage.

Surveying Damage and Mold

Once we have determined what type of damage we're dealing with, our technicians search the home visually and with moisture detection equipment to find out what objects have been affected, and what else needs to be done. Additionally, we look for signs of mold growth, which often takes priority in a cleanup operation.

Furniture and Water Removal

The next step is to remove all furniture from affected areas, and then pump out water if necessary. We use industrial-grade machinery to pump water from the interior to the exterior of the home, with either a portable or a truck-mounted pump.

Drying and Odor Treatments

At this point, we bring out more heavy machinery to begin drying and deodorizing the affected area, to make sure no more damage or mold growth occurs and any bad smells are removed.

Carpet Removal and Final Cleaning

In many cases, some or all of the carpeting in a room will need replacing. We make sure to evaluate carpeting carefully for moisture so as not to incur extra expenses. Sometimes, a cleaning may only be necessary, particularly when water damage is contained early on. After that is done, final cleanup and sanitization are done on walls and objects, then furniture is brought back into the home or rooms affected.

Water Damage Prevention Tips

11/29/2016 (Permalink)

The best way to prevent water damage from rainwater is to ensure the exterior materials of your home are properly constructed and maintained.

Water damage tends to leave its mark in the forms of wood rot, peeling paint,  wall stains, and mold growth. The best way to prevent water damage from rainwater and snow melt is to ensure the exterior materials of your home are properly constructed and maintained. Follow these tips to avoid costly future repairs.

  • Repair doors & windows - check for old and worn out doors or windows to ensure that your caulking isn't cracked.
  • Gutters  - clean and inspect your gutters regularly to ensure they are free from debris that can clog and cause water damage.
  • Downspouts -  clean and check your downspouts at least twice a year.  If you live in a extremely rainy climate, you should check them more frequently.
  • Sump pump - check it at least once a year and make sure that it is working properly.
  • Plants & Trees - some plants and trees around your home can be a problem if not properly maintained.  Make sure to trim the extended roots to prevent blockages from your drainage system.
  • Use a drainage snake, not chemical - chemical can eat away at your pipes.  Try your luck using a drain snake to avoid potential damage to your pipes.
